What is socialization?

Socialization encourages individuals to figure out how to work effectively in their society. It ensures through our life span, however, that some of the most significant socialization happens in infancy. Socialization is a long-lasting procedure amid which we acquire the social potentials and learn how to intermingle with individuals.

What are the Agents of Socialization?

Family

‘Primary socialization’ is referred to as the process of socialization during infancy.  The primary and the most significant agent of socialization is family. As babies, we are reliant on others to endure. It is our parents or other family members who demonstrate to us how to function properly. They teach us basic ethics, traditions, morals, and values which is a reflection of their own culture. In his process of socialization, he practices affection, support, authority, path, and fortification. He also learns his language in childhood.  People’s observations of actions suitable for their gender are the consequences of socialization and most of this is cultured in the family.

Secondary Socialization

Secondary socialization is as important as primary socialization. Secondary socialization is supported by secondary agents of socialization. Secondary agents are all those institutes or groups from which youngsters learn the culture of their society. Secondary agents of socialization include Mass Media, Schools, Religion, and peer groups.

Mass Media

From a very young age children are aware of and exposed to mass media (magazines, televisions, books, etc.) Even when they are infants, they watch cartoons which is a part of their culture. Mass media provide an individual with an extensive vision of culture and philosophies, along with responses to and conclusions about the values and ideas. Mass media have a boundless impact on people’s views and choices. Gender difference is apparent in mass media which teaches the children from a very young age that what to do and what to avoid for the reason that messages in media can have a strong influence on one’s behavior.

Schools

School is the first and foremost stage of a child’s educational career. It is the place where formal education takes place. Children are taught there, they learn about the rules and regulations, they learn how to interact with other children. The most important role of schools in the process of socialization other than educating is that the children learn to be independent of their parents and other family members. Gender role in the school also continues even after that the boys and girls study the same thing in a classroom or the playroom, they will act differently according to their genders. For instance, the baby girls will have all their interest in Barbie dolls and the boys in Spiderman or Batman.

Religion

Religion plays a very important role in the process of socialization as it provides strong guidelines to an individual and warns for punishment for any wrongdoing. Children learn about their religion both at home as well as educational institutions. To the ones who believe religions promise rewards for good deeds and punishment for bad actions. Religion is sacred to all the individuals respectively and one of the most important processes of socialization.

Peer groups

Peer groups are those individuals with whom we interact daily or in routine. It may be our neighbors, our fellows at school, our colleagues at offices, or even our friends from social media. No one can deny from this fact that peer groups have a very strong impact on socialization. Even the children have this influence of other children the way they behave, act, or work.
