As we reported earlier this week, there’s a demo out now for Level-5’s upcoming RPG: Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch. The demo has two short chapters to play through but they give you a good feel for how the final game will be.
The first chapter takes place in a forest and has you squaring off against a boss monster. After you defeat the boss you are then taken to the overworld where you can engage in random battles. The second chapter takes place on a mountain top. You have to climb to the peak of the mountain (battling enemies along the way) to eventually square off against another big boss monster. The levels show you the diversity of environments that the game will have. The game’s art design is done by the famous Studio Ghibli and the game looks and feels like one of their films.
The combat system is both turn based and real time. You are free to move the character during a fight and can select actions in real time. When you select a magic spell or go into your inventory the game pauses and you can take your time selecting what you need. You can fight as the main kid or have him summon small creatures to fight in his stead. The creatures also have their own set of magic spells. The real time/turn based thing is a bit weird at first but you will eventually adapt and after a while it will become second nature.
This demo was not the same one I played at NYCC and that’s good since it was nice to have actually participated in battles this time. Like the Comic con demo though, this one had a time limit. I wasn’t even able to enter the main town because time ran out. The demo gives gamers a good taste of what to expect though. A solid, traditional JRPG experience is hard to come by these days on consoles. When a game like Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch comes along, it’s a special thing indeed.
Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch will be available on January 22, 2013 on the Playstation 3.
