Looking Forward To: Bioshock: Infinite

Bioshock: Infinite - Elizabeth

For a guy who doesn’t like FPS games, I’m pretty excited for Bioshock: Infinite. Although I didn’t think it was the masterpiece everyone made it out to be; the original Bioshock was a really cool game and Infinite seems to be taking the formula that worked in that title to another level.

Like Bioshock, Bioshock: Infinite takes place in a utopian city gone wrong. Both cities are located in exotic locations (underwater and in the sky respectively) and both are racked by civil war that was instigated by differences in philosophical beliefs. What was great about Bioshock was that it was an FPS for people who aren’t meat heads. Infinite will no doubt follow in those footsteps and should give gamers something that will challenge them intellectually.

Of course the game will feature a good dose of action as well. The game will be filled with crazed citizens who want to kill you and there will be plenty of ways to finish them off. You’ll have guns of course but what makes Bioshock, well…Bioshock are the myriad of super powers at your disposal. You’ll be able to shoot fire and energy balls at foes, send swarms of angry insect at them and probably a whole bunch of other stuff we haven’t seen yet. Your companion: Elizabeth will also be able to use her unique abilities to help you out. One power that she has is the ability to bring forth objects from alternate realities and timelines to aid you. The game takes place in the early 1900s so it’s going to be crazy to see alternate or future tech materialize out of nowhere.

Speaking about Elizabeth; I think she may end up being a classic video game character one day. It’s hard to explain, but there’s something about her that is captivating. I get the sense that when we play the game and see her story play out that it will be something truly memorable. I also like the fact that the character that you play as will not be your typical mute FPS protagonist and will actually have a personality of his own. For whatever reason, I don’t entirely think that the main character is a good guy but we’ll have to see how that turns out. Bioshock loves to have twists so I expect something huge to happen with the main character.

I’m always looking for the next video game that will push narrative in the medium forward and I think that Bioshock: Infinite will deliver the goods. The sky city Columbia is incredible and I’m sure that it will be another character in the game just as much as Rapture was in Bioshock. The action will be intense and the characters and story will have people talking for most of next year. I don’t normally look forward to FPS games but Bioshock: Infinite is most definitely on my “day one purchase” list.

Bioshock: Infinite will be released on PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime in 2013.
