Recently I had the pleasure of putting in some serious game time with HAWKEN, the new FPS mech game from Adhesive Games. It’s a gorgeous mech game in a futuristic cyberpunk world. The game is set to debut on 12/12/12 as a free to play game and will offer in game purchases for other goodies.
Unlike most traditional FPS mech games like Mechwarrior, HAWKEN plays more fastpaced like Call Of Duty. You can run, slide left to right and hover. There are several different mechs and weapons to choose from. You can go heavy, medium or light if you really want to move fast. Weapons range from machine guns to long range missiles.
HAWKEN is a graphical beast and I’ve never seen anything like it. It blends a murky, desolate, backdrop with a post apocalyptic, cyberpunk, city scape. It’s very dusty and full of weird mechanical design like you would see in Blade Runner. I can bet that most people will spend their first minutes with the game just gazing at the graphics.
I played about 12 multiplayer games and had no issue with the controls or level design. At this early stage, HAWKEN plays like a finished game. I’m not saying that to blow smoke up anyone’s ass either. It’s gameplay is not only perfect, but it’s also refreshing. It’s like they took the bulky mechs from Mechwarrior and mixed them with the speed and maneuverability of Armored Core.
HAWKEN is going to set a precedent. Not only is it going to be a solid entry into the mech genre, but it’s also proving once again, that the Free To Play model works and is here to stay. Sign up for the beta at http://www.playhawken.com.
