E3 2013: WATCH_DOGS Preview

WATCH_DOGS was easily the biggest game of E3 2012 where it made its world debut. At this year’s E3, the game also had a big presence. People are eagerly anticipating this new open world game from Ubisoft.

The story of WATCH_DOGS takes place in the city of Chicago in the near future. The city is linked via a network called the Central Operating System (CTOS). This system controls virtually all of the city’s technology and also has the information of almost all of its citizens.

In the game, you’ll play as a hacker/former thug named Aiden Pierce. Aiden’s criminal past led to the death of his family. He is now on the hunt for those responsible for their demise. He’ll use his hacking skills to manipulate the city around him as well as get information on those he seeks. As the player, you’ll essentially be able to control every piece of technology you see using Aiden’s smartphone. The city of Chicago will be your personal weapon in WATCH_DOGS.

Hacking into systems will get you out of some jams but for others, some good old fashioned physicality is needed. You’ll have access to 30 traditional weapons which include batons and firearms. You can use your hacking skills and weapons to help you out when you’re in a pinch. The game is designed so that you can create your own plan of attack.

Since this is an open world game, you’ll have the chance to drive over 65 different vehicles. Ubisoft Montreal partnered up with Ubisoft Reflections, the studio behind the Driver series so the driving (and racing?) in WATCH_DOGS should be on point. You’ll also be able to navigate on foot and climb to building rooftops if need be.

WATCH_DOGS, will have a multiplayer component to it but it won’t be typical. You’ll “discover new levels of interaction, cooperation and confrontation between players thanks to a brand new multiplayer game system that links the single and multiplayer modes into one seamless experience. That means no menus, no loading screens, just instant open world multiplayer action.” All of this is a bit vague but I’m sure we’ll find out more soon.

You’ll also be able to stay connected even when you’re not near your console. Through a mobile app, you’ll be able to connect with friends and complete challenges. This app has duel-screen gameplay that lets you play from anywhere at any time.

With all of these features in place, it looks like WATCH_DOGS is set to be one of the top games of this fall. The game has lofty goals and it will be interesting to see if it achieves them.

WATCH_DOGS will be released on PC, Playstation 3, Wii U and Xbox 360 on November 19th. Playstation 4 and Xbox One versions will be released sometime this fall.
