Warframe was originally a PC exclusive title. Thanks to the power of the PlayStation 4, gamers who don’t want to sell a kidney to buy a beastly PC can try it out. I saw this bad boy on the show floor and gave it a whirl. Here’s what I thought.
The demo I played had myself and three other players participated in what was essentially a horde mode. We had to fend off and survive five waves of enemies. The game is a third person shooter which is great because I could actually tell what the hell was going on. The character I played as had 3 standard weapons, a handgun, assault rifle and a sword.
What sets this game apart is the abilities that the characters have. Mine had four other abilities which ranged from defense, offense and buffing. These abilities can be activated by using the touchpad on the PlayStation 4 but to be honest, this didn’t work most of the time. What mostly happened was that I’d swipe to use an ability but my character would just shoot instead. Kind of a bummer but the game has only been in development for the PS4 for a month. This is supposed to be a launch title so hopefully they’ll iron out the kinks.
Combat and movement were smooth as hell. I think it’s a combination of the hard work being put into the game, as well as the super awesome Playstation 4 controller. This was the first shooting game type game I played with the new controller and let me tell you, it was a thing of beauty. You use the trigger buttons to aim and shoot. People know that most PS3 games used the front shoulder buttons to shoot instead of the back ones (the triggers). This change was a bit hard to get used to at first. Once I did settle in though it just felt right. Overall the controls for Warframe are just perfect for the type of game that it is.
When Warframe is released for the PS4, it will also be free to play like the PC version. I asked one of the development team if PS4 players can go against PC gamers. I was told that at this time, this isn’t possible but they are working with Sony to make this happen. I think that’d be a really cool idea. The game will have a ton of post release content and will continuously be patched and updated to make the experience better.
Warframe was released on PC in March 2013, and is confirmed as a PS4 launch title.
